Team Toluma

This past year we doubled the size of our flock of sheep to 110. In the next couple of months, we will begin milking the sheep for our third cheese- a mixed milk of sheep and goat. The goats and sheep recently ended a very successful kidding and lambing season.

Creamery & Cheese

We are thrilled that our creamery is up and running! Cheesemaker Anne Marie is producing a two-week-aged, bloomy rind, goat cheese named Kenne. In addition, we are making a fresh goat cheese named Liwa.

These cheeses both have Miwok names.  "Kenne," which is made with only one type of milk and is our very first cheese, appropriately means "one."  "Liwa" translates to "water," which we found applicable as the farm is blessed with copious water and much of our restoration efforts are focused on restoring the local watershed. Toluma Farms is dedicated to educating the community about local agriculture, thus we chose to highlight the farms original inhabitants, the Coastal Miwok Indians, with the cheese titles. The Coastal Miwoks inhabited the areas of Novato, Marshall, San Rafael, Petaluma, Bodega, and Tomales. They spoke their own language in the Utian linguistic group, a language that is unfortunately no longer natively used.

When it came time to create a logo for both the Tomales Farmstead Creamery and the cheese labels, we hoped that West Marin artist Tom Killion would create a woodcut print of our beloved barn. The truth is- we had never met Tom and he does not create artwork for commercial operations. However, being such big fans of his work, we thought it couldn't hurt to try. We called him up and, after he discovered that we were a local agriculture operation, he said he would come out and take a look. We repeat this story because it symbolizes and truly embodies the last ten years; such enthusiastic and deep support from the local community enables us to keep moving forward, even when obstacles seem insurmountable.

Tom was born and raised in Marin County and produced his first illustrated book in 1975. He has steadily been crafting multi-color landscape prints, carving his images into linden, plywood, linoleum and other block materials using Japanese hand tools.
